ABOUT US

We use data and research to visually communicate Palestinian experiences to provoke narrative change. We envision a liberated future for Palestinians in a world free from oppression.

Why Narrative Change?

Palestine is the subject of more than a century of colonial narratives upheld by imperial empires, which sustain the brutal system of Israeli settler colonialism and apartheid we see today. Although the basic facts and root causes of the Palestinian struggle are well-documented, they are frequently denied or obscured by those shielding Israel from accountability. Narrative work is about building spaces to uplift aspirations for liberation, and reach people who want to deepen their understanding and action in partnership with the Palestinian people.

Visualizing Palestine creates narrative interventions that convey the urgent and the actionable. We strive to capture not just stories of struggle, but of solidarity, sumud (steadfastness), and inspiration. Our visual tools ensure that factual, liberatory narratives about Palestine are visible, accessible, and interconnected with those of other movements working for collective liberation.

HOW WE WORK

RESEARCH & ANALYSIS

Collecting and monitoring the latest research and data around our narrative goals. Our process wheel shows how we approach data storytelling, moving cyclically through steps of research, story conceptualization, design, and outreach.

BUILDING PARTNERSHIPS

Identifying partnerships (explore VP's partners here) and deepening collaboration around shared narrative priorities, strategies, and actions within the Palestinian solidarity movement and across movements. If you are interested in collaboration with us, please reach out via our contact page.

OUR VALUES & PRINCIPLES

  • Liberation will be achieved collectively, by working in solidarity within and across movements globally and developing trusting relationships that enable deep collaboration.

  • Liberation requires both the dismantling of dominant, oppressive narratives and the building of new, inclusive stories that center justice in the solutions we pursue and the way we pursue them.

  • This is emotionally draining work. Respect for our capacity and mutually-supportive relationships are essential to principled, ethical and sustainable practice.

  • Experimentation, flexibility, and responsiveness to changing political, social, economic, and technological conditions is important to maintaining our impact.

  • Today’s social justice efforts build on the gains and learning of past movements and will continue to evolve in strength and impact beyond our generation.

  • Our need for funding should not compromise our principles or values.

CREATIVE COMMONS ETHOS

We embrace a Creative Commons ethos, providing resources that anyone can use free of charge. Our tools are a reflection of a dedicated community of collaborators, members, donors, and volunteers.

How it started

Visualizing Palestine launched in 2012 with Hunger Strikes, an infographic published as Palestinian political prisoner Khader Adnan, who was being held in an Israeli jail without charge or trial, was on his sixty-sixth day of hunger strike and reportedly near death. The infographic generated traction on social media for uplifting Palestinian civil resistance as part of a larger human story of overcoming injustice. It also signified the promise of digital media and spaces to bring stories of Palestine to the masses in a way that wasn’t possible before, changing how people think about the issues and get plugged into social movements.

Since then, we’ve been continuously collaborating to build a go-to space for deeply researched, clearly visualized stories about Palestine. Our efforts today owe greatly to the vision and efforts of our Cofounders and first Co-directors, Ramzi Jaber and Joumana al-Jabri, and early partners, Ahmad Barclay, Hani Asfour, and Naji El-Mir.
