From the anti-apartheid movement to Israeli apartheid to climate change, students have used and continue to use divestment as a non-violent tool to organize for the future they want to live in. Since 2009, 51 North American universities have seen motions pass on campus to divest from Israel and companies profiting off of Israeli human rights abuses. Since 2011, 46 North American universities have fully or partially divested from fossil fuels due to student organizing. Both of these movements draw on the historical precedent of 168 North American universities divesting from South Africa during apartheid.
